Acorns & Oaks join nationwide
Quilt Pink Day

The Morgan Messenger
9/27/2006

Local quilting enthusiasts will get together for the first-ever Quilt Pink Day, a fundraising event to benefit the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation on Saturday, September 30.

Hosting the event locally will be Acorns & Oaks, a quilting shop located at 168 North Washington Street (Route 522 north) in Berkeley Springs.

On Quilt Pink Day, quilters across the nation will make pink-and-white quilt blocks at their local quilt shops. The shops will then piece together the blocks and send their finished quilts to Better Homes and Gardens, American Patchwork & Quilting magazine for an online auction slated for May 2007. Net proceeds from the auction will be presented to the Komen Foundation the following October to fund breast cancer research and community outreach programs.

For more details about the local event, call 304-258-2277 or visit Acorns & Oaks. Quilt Pink information is also available at www.quiltpink.com.

New Shop Supplies Local Quilters
The Morgan Messenger
Wednesday, November 2, 2005
by Kate Shunney

The original three ownersMorgan County's quilters have had their prayers answered. Instead of having to drive an hour just to get a spool of thread, needle workers can now visit their own home-town quilt shop -- Acorns & Oaks at 168 North Washington Street in downtown Berkeley SpringKathy Arbogast, Cheryl Rink and Shirley Hillgren opened the shop on October 1 [2005] and it’s already become a regular stop for members of the Delectable Mountain[s ...ed] Quilt Guild. In fact, the three owners are all members of the guild and batted around the idea of a quilt shop at guild meetings.

In addition to all sorts of thread, Acorns & Oaks carries quilting fabrics, scissors, batting, cutting mats, needles, buttons, books and finished quilted and embell-ished fabric items. Acorn & Oaks can also special-order fabric or supplies. Quilting classes will start at the shop in January.

Those who don’t quilt can certainly find something of interest in the shop. Among the finished fabric items on consignment are vintage quilts, embellished sweatshirts, quilted handbags, flags, note cards and magnets.

Shirley does embroidery for Acorns & Oaks customers. They can put a name or company logo on aprons or just about anything fabric.

Acorns & Oaks is open Wednesday 2-6 p.m., Friday 10-8, Saturday 10-6 and Sunday 11-5. and also by appointment. The shop can be reached at 304-258-2277.

BERKELEY SPRINGS, W.Va. - Acorns & Oaks, a new business that opened this month, is referred to by the owners as "your hometown quilt shop."

Kathy Arbogast, Cheryl Rink and Shirley Hillgren are members of the local quilting group, Delectable Mountains Quilt Guild.

"We've never been shop own-ers before, but we are so excited about this," Rink said. "We are veteran fabric and quilt shop shoppers." The three have been sewing all their lives, she said. "We grew up with the treadle sewing machine," Arbogast added.

Acorns & Oaks offers 100 percent cotton quilting fabrics and notions. "In addition, we have vintage quilts from 1900 to 1920 for sale, as well as new quilts, wall hangings and home decor," Rink said. "Two rocking chairs are available to browse the quilting books or a place for husbands to sit while their wives shop." There also is clothing embellished with applique and embroidery for sale, she said.
These are treasures that could last forever. - Cheryl Rink

The shop owners will consider quality items for consignment. Some Delectable Mountains Quilt Guild members have items on consignment, Rink said.

Karen McCusker has five quilts on display in the store. McCusker owns a nearby hair salon and is "a working quilter." she said, but finds the time to make quilts.

"Roses for the Bride" is a queen-size quilt and won first place at the Morgan County Fair this year."These are treasures that could last forever," McCusker said."These are heirlooms passed down within the family," Rink said.

Starting Jan. 7, Acorns & Oaks will offer quilting classes called Quilter's Night Out, Rink said. The class will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on the first Saturday of every month and will be ongoing, she said. Basic quilting will be taught.Sally Marshall, president of Travel Berkeley Springs, said with quilting back in vogue, "we are thrilled to get a quilt shop in Berkeley Springs."Acorns & Oaks, 168 N. Washington St., is open Wednesday from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.; Friday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Saturday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
